joggle

A joggle is a small offset, like a step, created in a sheet of metal so that one sheet can overlap another with no increase in thickness. Joggles are commonly used to create flush joints when fabricating with metals.

Key Features:

  • Purpose: Allows for overlapping of sheets and maintains a flat surface to ensure smooth and precise assemblies.
  • Formation: Made with bending or pressing using a joggle die or with a press.
  • Application: Very popular within the aerospace and auto markets and within all sheet metal fabrication to improve fit-up and provide assembly satisfaction.

Joggles are an integral part of ensuring the strongest, cleanest, and most aerodynamic joint, especially when the uniformity of the surface is of high importance, as they can be used to eliminate gaps between adjacent surfaces that receive loads, improve load distribution properties of the finished product, and generally play a significant role in controlling the overall tolerances required, as well as obtaining flush finishes for products belonging to industries that require close precision.
